AboutFounded 2022 · Madrid

We're building the platform team
your company shouldn't have to.

Scalable was started by four engineers who'd spent a decade rebuilding the same thing — Kubernetes, Terraform, Datadog, audit log, on-call rota — at four different companies. We are 137 people in three cities, profitable since month nineteen, and accountable to the customers who trust us with their production. Not to a growth chart.

01The story

Four engineers,
one recurring problem.

Every company we'd worked at — fintech, biotech, two scale-ups — eventually hired a four-person platform team to do roughly the same job. We thought we could ship that team, as a product.

In late 2021, the four of us were on a video call complaining about a Helm chart. Between us we had built this exact stack — Kubernetes, ArgoCD, Terraform, Datadog, Vault, an in-house audit log — at Scandit, Beekeeper, Sonar and ProtonMail. None of it was novel. None of it was a moat. And every time, the price of "we run our own infra" was four senior engineers who'd rather be shipping product.

We left those jobs in February 2022 and started Scalable in a one-room office on Calle Serrano. The first version deployed in thirty-eight seconds. We thought that was magic. The hundredth customer told us thirty-eight seconds was nice, but they'd switch for signed audit logs and EU residency. So we built that next.

Three years on we've kept the same shape: a small team, no vanity metrics, and a product that does the boring, regulated, multi-region production work — so the engineers using it can do the interesting work. We are profitable, founder-led, and not for sale.

02Principles

Six things we actually believe.

Most "values" pages are a collection of words nobody disagrees with. These are the ones we've made expensive bets on.

01Boring infra

The interesting part is your product.

Production should be unremarkable. Two clicks, predictable bills, no 3am pager. If our platform is the most exciting thing about your week, we've failed.

Not: "innovate on infrastructure" we've heard enough
02One control plane

Eighteen regions, one mental model.

Every region runs the same primitives, the same CLI, the same SLA. You don't learn a new product to ship in São Paulo.

Not: a region matrix with 40 footnotes
03Compliance is a feature

Audits in the product, not the sales deck.

GDPR pinning, signed audit log, BYO HSM, DPA Art. 28, BYO IdP — all in the free tier. SOC 2 is in progress (Q4 2026); we'd rather lose a deal than ship a "contact us" lockbox.

Not: enterprise add-ons for the basics
04Honest pricing

The bill should match the graph.

Per-second metering, no minimums, no egress traps. If your traffic halves, your bill halves. We publish the formula on a public page.

Not: "talk to sales" for line item three
05Profitable, on purpose

We owe our customers, not a board.

We took two rounds, with founders in control of every term. We've been profitable since 2023. Our roadmap is set by the people running production on us.

Not: growth at all costs we've seen the ending
06Small team, long horizon

137 people. Forever-stage company.

Hiring slowly. Writing code. Talking to customers. We're aiming to be the kind of company that's still here, with the same people, in 2046.

Not: a unicorn race we're not running
03Founders

The four of us
who started complaining.

Plus 133 of the best people we've ever worked with. Engineering is 70% of headcount. On-call is shared. Equity is published.

L
Lena Berger
CEO & co-founder
Wrote the first deploy script. Still reviews half of the runbooks. Carries the on-call phone every fifth Saturday.
M
Mateus Oliveira
CTO & co-founder
Designed the multi-region rollout protocol. Left a staff role to start Scalable. Won't fly on production deploy days.
A
Anna Hofstetter
Head of Trust & co-founder
Runs our compliance programme — DPAs, audit log design, BYO HSM. Was a regulator at FINMA before she got bored.
D
David Chen
Head of Product & co-founder
Talks to customers every day. Writes the changelog. Insists every feature ship with a one-paragraph "why".
04Where we work

Three offices.
One shared calendar.

Hybrid by default. Everyone meets in Madrid twice a year for the on-call retrospective and the engineering offsite.

05Investors & advisors

Two rounds. Founders still in control of every term.

We took the smallest cheques that let us hire the right people and ship the right product. No board observers from funds whose name we can't pronounce. No clauses we'd be embarrassed to publish.
